Amanda's personal NYFW finale Shows started at noon today at the ‘Bryant Park’ tents, so thinking ahead; thought I'd best pack my bags for tomorrow's exit and tonight, let my hair down and party like a rock star. A last ditch effort promoted by my lack of interest in any of the after events hosted these past eight days.
Let me just say 'Marc Jacobs' In keeping with the election theme of Fashion Week, Marc Jacobs should run for office. He certainly has the power of the people on his side, with an even deeper pool of celebrity followers than Obama!
Cankles, Patricia Fields and Ugly Betty Slept till 9am this morning and missed the DKNY show at 10am, grrr. At Bryant Park on 42nd between 6th and 7th, there are three main runway rooms behind the ropes and security; the Salon, Promenade and the Tent, the Tent being the largest, holding shows such as BCBGMAXAZRIA, Rock & Republic, Miss Sixty, Carolina Herrera, Betsey Johnson and the likes.

Fashionwirepress.com’s Ed Kavishe and Amanda at a Sasha Pivovarova exhibition Crazy late night after day one, myself and my two favourite photographer friends from last season, Ed and Rodin of www.fashionwirepress.com, alongside stylist Brigitte Segura, yellow cabbed it to SOHO for a late night feed. Hadn’t eaten all day and was feeling rather ‘skeleton chic’.
‘These are the days of my life’ photographing Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York Spring 2009. An introduction is necessary to bring you up to speed on the madness of my decision to jump on an opportunity that only existed on my wish list up to two days prior to departure. It’s all thanks to the decision of two dear friends who bought me a ticket and the domino effect of everyone else telling me to go for it! And earnestly saying: ‘you can stay with a really good friend of mine’… so Kiwi. Even my kids said “Mum are you stupid? Why aren’t you packing already?” I couldn’t think of any reason except the depressing ‘I can’t afford to’ and in this situation that didn’t cut it. So, the assault was on to get my business, family, house, homestay students and (most importantly) wardrobe, in order in just 48 hours before takeoff.

Backstage at S&B vie by Sass & Bide, designers Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton did several rounds of media interviews with the likes of Jackie Frank from Marie Claire and Channel 7. By the time they got to Patty Huntington from Vogue Australia, their feet were aching in their sky-high heels. ‘Do you mind if I take these off?’ Heidi asked Patty… who replied ‘Why don’t we all take our heels off?’ The girls seemed in high spirits, but respectful of Kate, a friend to whom the collection is dedicated. ‘We made sure there were photos of her pinned up backstage so everyone knew we were celebrating her spirit and her life.’

Well, another Australian Fashion Week has come to a close. In the usual fashion Deputy Editor Miranda Likeman lists her weeks faves: Best outfit seen on the catwalk: The delicate ruched one shoulder dress from Melanie Cutfield. I must have one immediately in black! Personal Highlight: Meeting up with Megan, the subject of our Model Stalking 2006 at ANZFW. She is doing really well and now works in Paris... but the girl has lost some serious weight! I told her to put a few pounds back on and that we hope to see her for this year's ANZFW. Personal Lowlight: Going home early on the last night, after being too exhausted to party with everyone else. Best show: TV. Best goodie bag item: The full size Elizabeth Arden perfume from the Camilla show – even for people who weren’t in the front row! Designer to watch: The girls behind TV. What I will know for next time: I am too old to keep up with the twenty-something kids. Plus, always take your comfortable shoes and a coat you idiot, what were you thinking? Fave celeb: Two this year, Miranda Kerr and Miranda Otto. Motto of the week: Any press is good press.

I just popped backstage at Tina Kalivas to talk to the hair and make up people - and found Tina sitting behind a sewing machine power stitching ruffles on to a dress. Then a skirt was put on a model, only to find that one of the seams had split. Cool as a cucumber, Tina asks if anyone has seen a bag of fabric: and when the answer is in the negative, she calmly looks at it, then tells an assistant to pull another hem and stretch the fabric to fit. The woman is a legend! If any designers I know were in the same situation, they would be a basket case: but not Tina, the woman needs to teach serenity classes. Anyway the make up and hair looks fantastic and the garments even better. Only one hour to go until the show!

Every Fashion Week has at least one VIP spot where life is a little closer to heaven than where we mere mortals reside most of the time. At RAFW, besides the Rosemount Wine Bar (surprisingly easy to get access to with its free MAC touchups, drinks, coffee, food and continuous barbeque) there is the Redken retreat. I knew dear readers you’d want to know what it was like so arranged with the lovely people at Redken NZ to have an appointment. There a Redken stylist Kira pinned up my only-just-long-enough hair so brilliantly that it lasted all night, overnight and the next day! Kira is alternating working at the retreat, with doing hair for show, and had done LifewithBird that morning. She said the great thing about that style was that it was hair that you could do at home. Grab a pony (however high or low you want); pull some pieces out; plait the pony and then wrap into a bun to give that so fashionable (so elusive!) done-undone look. Fashion note: I’ve seen a notable number of “sexy secretaries” among RAFW attenders. Super slender Sydneysiders look hot in tight little on the knee skirts and prissy fitted shirts.

For all of our complaining that Fashion Weeks involve such long hours and draining demands of your time for close to 18 hours every day, you have to be appreciative of being involved when you spend a leisurely hour enjoying breakfast in a bar overlooking Sydney harbour on a crisp but sunny Friday morning, indulging in 16 ethereal pieces from the Fellini's Girls collection by Jayson Brunsdon. Inspired by the women in the early sixties films of Italian Director Federico Fellini, the shapes and silhouettes were pure, magnificent and elegance personified. While there are other colours in the collection, Brunsdon wanted to make a focused statement by showing only the ivory colourways, a bit like a cleansing sorbet between courses of a meal - to prepare the pallette for the delights to come.

Upstairs in the very VIP Rosemount Wine Bar, we had the misfortune of sitting next to the owner of one of the top modeling agencies in Sydney. Although she was charming and funny at first, as the wines got poured during the night she got more and more drunk and the words started not making much sense. All of a sudden, she decided that her "French" Jacket had been stolen - even though nobody around actually recalls her wearing a jacket at all. She got quite abusive to patrons and staff demanding that security search everyone's bags! "It's French you know!" is all I could hear being screamed out over and over. We left the bar and proceeded to queue up for the next show when, miss where's-my-jacket ran over to us. "You were sitting with me upstairs - where's my jacket? It's French! Did you take it? Let me see your bags!" And after us getting quite miffed with her and telling her we have no idea about her jacket, she went through the line and poked around in everybody's bags, much to the horror of the A listers and celebrities! After the show she was still at it, and for the whole night and wherever we went, there she was - running around people and asking for her jacket. I imagine she got home and found it sitting right where she left it.

The Antipodium After Party was set in a grungy part of town, in a bar that looked very much like an old Victorian Terraced House. It was down many steps, had Persian rugs covering the floors and photos of old Western Cowboys in gold frames all over the walls. This suited the theme of the show very well. The place was filled with hot looking cool twenty-somethings drinking Vodka and air kissing - LOTS of air kissing... I did overhear a guy go up to another guy and start to flirt with him outside. Pulling out all the lines, he then asked if his victim was gay or straight to which guy A replied "Straight". Then for the entire duration of one drink and 3 cigarettes, he tried to convince the very straight guy to go home with him. Saying all sorts of things like "It'll be worth you while" and "you can just receive if you don't wanna give" etc. It was fun to see a predator at work! Models aplenty with higher heels than they could handle... but nice vibe. But one has to call it a night sometime... so off home to bed at around 1am.
